The Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering (IBMT) is one of the five institutes of the Alliance Life Science of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and concentrates mainly on the development of technology. IBMT is working in close collaboration with industry since its foundation in 1987. IBMT offers solutions in the areas of biomedical and medical engineering, laser medicine, biotechnology, health telematics, environmental control systems, laboratory development, cryo technology, material testing, home systems, air quality control in homes and cars, security systems as well as industrial process automation and in-line/on-line process control, in particular for food, chemical and pharmaceutical industry.

The institute promotes the "lively-experienced" technology transfer to medicine and biotechnology and various areas of industry and knowledge intense services. IBMT applies its potential on subjects, such as non- or minimal-invasivity, microsystems engineering, implant technology (interfaces between technical and biological microsystems), molecular and cellular biotechnology, nano(bio)technology, cryotechnology, biocompatibility, ultrasound technology, sensor manufacturing technology, magnetic resonance, telemetric data and energy transfer, health telematics and multilocal sensor systems connected by communication technologies. It focuses on applications in the areas of medical diagnosis, therapy and therapy control as well as on equivalent needs in various industries. Important new fields are the methods and technologies for industrial applications of the molecular and cellular biotechnology and the cryotechnology for storage of living samples at low temperatures as well as isolation, cultivation and differentiation of stem cells for the regenerative medicine. Since 3 years Fraunhofer IBMT works in the field of stem cell research and obtained as the only institute of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft the permission No. 18 and 19 of the Robert-Koch-Institute to import human embryonal stem cells.
Technology transfer starting from basic research spans the whole innovation chain ranging from scientific-technical consulting, feasibility studies, prototype development, field tests, engineering and support to low- and medium-volume manufacturing is separate project phases. Spin-off companies of IBMT serve for system manufacturing when needed. IBMT is active in the regions Saarland State and Brandenburg State and fulfills overhead-tasks in these regions with regard to regional restructuring. With the foundation of IBMT, Fraunhofer Society intended to contribute to science and research in particular to modern technologies and technology transfer in the area of clinical research in cooperation with well-known national and international university departments and hospitals in various fields. IBMT is located in St. Ingbert with its mother institute (near Saarbrücken) and is directed by Prof. Dr. Günter Fuhr who also accepted a call on the Chair of Biotechnology and Medical Engineering. The institute is financed by R&D contracts of public and private (industrial) customers. The integration of medical/biomedical, microsystems engineering and biotechnology at IBMT has leading opportunity in Europe. IBMT belongs to the network of the 57 independent institutes of the Fraunhofer Society. More than 230 scientific and technical employees and a great number of research fellows as and practical workers belonged to IBMT in 2008. Scientific-technical know-how, and a long-term experience based on practical results and products in the areas of microsystems/laser medicine, biotechnology, ultrasound and magnetic resonance in addition to new expertise in the field of sensor manufacturing technology guarantee a high-level quality of R&D support and a flexible and adaptive definition of customer-tailored and problem-oriented task solutions. The European Center of Competence for Biomedical Mikrodevices (MEDICS) supports as a service center device manufacturers and biomedical users in the evaluation, introduction and usage of microtechnologies for biomedical research and new products. MEDICS gives access to the adequate technologies and biomedical expertises for the product or process development and supports all phases of the product and process development. Since September 2001 IBMT is a member of the Fraunhofer Alliance "Life Sciences".
