The Fraunhofer Life Sciences Alliance was established in mid-2001 by the Fraunhofer Institutes IBMT, IGB, IME and ITEM. The innovative strength of the alliance is rooted in the scientific expertise, commitment and creativity of the staff involved. It derives momentum through dialog with cooperation partners in industry.

The pooling of capabilities results in the availability of a broad range of methods and services, of which only a few examples can be mentioned here. They include the search for new pharmaceutical agents and their testing.

In addition to pre-clinical trials at molecular and cellular level, extending to animal-model testing, clinical studies can also be conducted. Molecular medicine including genetic engineering and genomics/proteomics together with molecular farming broadens the spectrum of applied research.

In addition to allergy and asthma research, work focuses on screening technologies, tissue engineering and bioanalytics. Apart from a broad research field in environmental and consumer protection, customers have access to further services in medical engineering, including bioimplants and the associated sensor technology.
