The department’s object of research is the development and application of intelligent invasive and noninvasive interfaces to the nervous system and their use for both stimulation and registration of bioelectric potentials.
The hard- and software components required for this purpose are developed and manufactured. The spectrum ranges from miniaturised, implantable electrodes, monitoring systems and signal processing to the application.
All essential technological requirements, such as clean rooms, plasma equipment, encapsulation technology (e.g. parylene coating, silicone processing), electrode characterisation, simulation envi-ronment, reference laboratories etc. are available in the department. Moreover there are laboratorys for the development and the application of devices and methods for clinical neurophysiology. Here, new sensors can test directly for example in the environment of a driving simulator.
The department Medical Engineering & Neuroprosthetics considers the increased integration of cognitive systems in research work to be another step in the development of intelligent implants. Especially for monitoring systems, e.g. for intraoperative monitoring or for the monitoring of elderly people in their domestic environment, cognitive functions are increasingly expected and presumed.
