The sensor of an ultrasound system is very important for the overall system performance. In most cases it is necessary that working frequency, beam pattern and sensitivity are adjusted for the needs of an application
Before a new idea or product can be placed on the market a development of appropriate sensors or the modification of an existing sensor is necessary.
The group Piezosystems assists you on the complete way of product development from the idea to the production with following services:
- Sensor development
- Sensor modification
- Consulting services
- Feasibility studies
- System integration
- Ultrasonic measurement technology
- Sensor production technology
Medical Sensors

Ultrasound technology is well established in the medical sector for diagnostic and therapeutic applications.
Ultrasound imaging is the common application, but also blood flow measurement, diagnosis of Osteoporosis or the assistance of healing processes by the application of ultrasound are important applications in medicine.
We offer development services and production technologies for medical sensors with frequencies up to 50 MHz. For example:
- Linear and phased arrays for imaging
- Two-dimensional arrays
- Doppler sonographie
- Catheter-based or intravascular probes
- Therapeutic applicators
- Miniaturized Piezosystems (e. g. hearing aid)
Industrial Sensors

Ultrasound sensors are used in many industrial measurement applications. Best interaction between sensor, measuring medium and object under given environmental conditions (pressure, temperature, medium) is the base for a high-quality and safe signal analysis.
We offer development services and production technologies up to 50 MHz for all type of media on the following fields:
- Level measurement
- Flow measurement
- Process control (e.g. concentration)
- Geometry measurement
- Object detection
- Measurement of layer thickness
Air Transducers

Ultrasound transducers for soft sound propagation media like air are required for distance measuring, for flow metering of gases or the characterization of surfaces. The transmission characteristics should be both sensitive and broadband at acceptable costs. This often canonly be achieved by an application-specific development.
The group Piezosystems & Manufacturing Technology provides market- and feasibility studies as well as development capacity for such transducers and takes care of your problem solution up to the production. The upper frequency for these applications ist in the range of 2 MHz.
Immersion & Contact Transducers

- Ultrasound immersion and contact transducers.

Immersion and contact transducers form a special group of industrial sensors because they have contact with the medium and/or the object. With this they are exposed to the environment conditions (e.g. pressure, temperature). But furthermore they need to have special characteristics like medium stability and abrasion resistance in the industrial environment.
We offer development services and production technologies for sensors up to 50 MHz in the following fields:
- Level measurement technology
- Flow measurement technology
- Process control
- Geometry measurement
- Quality control (e. g. material properties)
High Frequency Sensors and Arrays

High frequency ultrasound transducers are used in applications where resolution is the most demanding requirement. Ranging from 100 MHz to 2000 MHz center frequency these transducer are able to achieve resolutions from 0.01 to 0.001 mm.
Our high frequency transducers are based on thin film piezoelectric materials as active materials and manufactured using micromachining and microsystems technology. Transducers can vary from unfocused or focused single elements to linear arrays with 32-200 elements.
We offer to produce transducers satisfying the requirements of your special application and the development of the process technology if large numbers of transducers are needed.

- Fish finding
- Census of marine life
- Object detection and identification
- Collision avoidance
- Bottom profiling
- Sub-bottom profiling
- Underwater communication
- Navigation assistance
We offer development services and production technologies for the fields mentioned above and the following devices:
- Echosounders
- Sidescan sonar systems
- Linear or Phased arrays
- 2D-Arrays
- Doppler sensors
- Communication modules

Applications of ultrasound in which high-acoustic intensity is inserted in a medium are called “high-power applications”. For example:
- Cleaning
- Welding
- Dispersing
- Disagglomeration
- Destroying of germs, tissue or objects
We offer development services and production technologies for high-efficient oscillation systems for the following devices:
- Sonotrodes (for ultrasonic welding, dispersion, dental technology etc.)
- Tonpilz resonators for low-frequency cleaning
- Megasound cleaning systems
- Ultrasonic applicators for medical applications (e. g. therapy devices, ultrasonic lithotripsy)
Piezocomposite Manufacturing

The group Piezosystems & Manufacturing Technology develops and manufactures customer-specific and standardized 1-3 piezocomposits in the frequency range from 50 kHz to 5 MHz (in special cases up to 20 MHz).
The constant quality of the composites is warranted by using high-precison CNC structuring techniques and a detailled and completely documented mechanical resp. piezoelectrical quality assurance.

Production or mass-production aspects are of special importance for each new product - especially for ultrasonic sensors. In such an oscillating system small variations of the components or the production parameters are decisive for the final characteristic of the sensor and with this for the complete measurement system.
Therefore we consider aspects of production early in the development process. At the end of a development we offer to transfer the “new“ device into production. The cooperation of development and production technology is an important advantage of the group Piezosystems and Manufacturing Technology.
At the location Sulzbach we have special facilities for all needs of production:
- Production planning
- Sensor production facilities
- Quality assurance
- Production of pilot productions and small batches
