Biomimetics is the transfer of successful biological methods, principles and systems on technical applications. While technical solutions are often superior to natural systems with respect to precision, velocity or reproducibility, the appeal of natural solutions is adaptability, flexibility, redundancy and tolerance towards perturbations. By analyzing solutions from nature and transferring identified principles to technical systems, new technological approaches can be found.
The technical focus of the Biomimetics group is the optimization and functionalization of PDMS structures and the directed implementation of flexibility. By this, actuators and sensors for medical technology with completely new properties and applications become feasible even in ínhospitable environments.
